We live in times of increasing insecurity. Solidarity is under pressure and survival of the slickest seems to be the credo. The world has become a more unsettled and unpredictable place. Development aid is discredited and in international politics it is the law of the jungle that increasingly prevails, the brazen are taking over the world.
Niccolò Machiavelli would not have been that much impressed. This is simply the way it is. Human beings are weak and easily corrupted. Beneath the veneer of well-meaning administrators and politicians, there is always a second reality of power politics.
This is the way things go, whether you like it or not, this is reality.
“It would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved.”
Machiavelli accepts only one objective in politics: how to acquire power and strengthen it. To some this will be hard to swallow. Since Enlightenment morals have been seen to be superior to power. The moral capacity is what distinguished men from animals. Yet the modern tide seems to be turning towards Bertold Brecht’s motto: “Erst kommt die Macht, dann kommt der Moral.” In an unfair world one has to arm oneself.
The challenge in this course is to deal with the sometimes cynical reality of organizations by developing an instructive and powerful tool kit based on the thought of Machiavelli.
